Strategy Resumes Bitcoin Buying With 4,603 BTC After a 10-Week Pause, Lifting Holdings to 845,050
Strategy bought 4,603 bitcoin for about $369.7 million in the week of Aug 24 to 30, its first purchase in roughly ten weeks, funded by $602.8 million of at-the-market share sales that also paid for preferred-stock buybacks, dividends and a larger cash reserve.
Strategy, the Michael Saylor-led company formerly known as MicroStrategy, is buying bitcoin again. In an 8-K filed on August 31 the company disclosed the purchase of 4,603 BTC for approximately $369.7 million, or about $80,318 per coin including fees, during the week of August 24 to 30. It was the company's first acquisition in roughly ten weeks, according to Simply Wall St's summary on Yahoo Finance.
Where the holdings stand
845,050 BTC held as of August 30, acquired for an aggregate $63.73 billion at an average of $75,412 per coin.
That is roughly 4% of bitcoin's 21 million maximum supply, and the stack was worth about $67.5 billion at end-August prices per the Bitbo tracker.
Designated dollar assets of $6.71 billion: a $5.10 billion USD Reserve plus $1.61 billion of USD Cash.
In its statement the company said that with 845,050 bitcoin and $6.71 billion of USD assets, its net leverage stands at 0.0%.
How the week was funded
Strategy sold 4,531,421 MSTR shares through its at-the-market program for $602.8 million net. Only $369.7 million of that went to bitcoin. The remainder covered $151.8 million of repurchases of its STRC preferred stock (1,557,177 shares retired, leaving $364.8 million of the buyback authorization), $50.7 million of STRC dividends and $30.0 million added to USD Cash. Some coverage describes the full $602.8 million as bitcoin funding; the 8-K figures show it was the total raise across all four uses.
Reading the pause and the return
The ten-week gap coincided with a period in which bitcoin traded below Strategy's average cost and the company prioritized buying back its own preferred shares and building a dollar cushion, both of which reduce the pressure to sell coins in a drawdown. The return to buying at around $80,000 came just before bitcoin's rebound above $81,000 on September 4, though it was reported at roughly $77,200 when 99Bitcoins covered the filing on September 2. MSTR's market capitalization was about $51.1 billion at the time of the Simply Wall St note.
One data caveat: Bitbo's tracker shows a different aggregate cost and average price from the 8-K; the figures above follow the company's own filing. Strategy's purchases are financed by issuing equity and preferred stock, so shareholders are diluted with each raise, and the company's stock remains a leveraged proxy for bitcoin rather than a substitute for holding it.
