Hyperliquid Faces an $800 Million HYPE Core-Contributor Unlock, but Past Tranches Were Barely Claimed

About 9.92 million HYPE, worth roughly $800 million at recent prices, vests to Hyperliquid's core contributors on Sept 6, the largest token unlock of early September. Prior monthly tranches saw only a small fraction claimed, which has muted the sell pressure so far.

Hyperliquid, the largest on-chain perpetuals exchange, faces its biggest scheduled token release of the month on September 6, when roughly 9.92 million HYPE vest to the project's core contributors. At recent prices that is worth about $797 million to $808 million depending on the price date used, or close to 1% of the 1 billion maximum supply, according to unlock trackers cited by Bitrue and CryptoTicker.

How the schedule works

Core contributors were allocated 23.8% of supply, or 238 million HYPE, at the November 2024 token generation event. After a one-year cliff, the allocation vests linearly in monthly installments running through 2027 and 2028, which produces the recurring 9.92 million figure. Tokenomist lists the next installment for October 6. Circulating supply is estimated at between 222 million and 252 million HYPE, so a full release would be a meaningful addition to float.

Why the headline number overstates the risk

Vesting is not the same as selling. Recipients must actively claim their tokens, and Hyperliquid's contributors have historically claimed very little. March data cited by CryptoTicker showed only 1.75% of the comparable 9.92 million tranche claimed, and Bitrue notes cumulative claim rates well under 1% in some earlier periods. Bitrue's summary is blunt: HYPE has historically claimed far less than its projected unlock amounts, which has softened past sell pressure.

CryptoTicker also flags a separate August 29 release of about 14.18 million HYPE that included insider shares as posing greater immediate impact than the September 6 contributor tranche.

The wider unlock calendar

  • SUI: 13.53 million tokens, about $9.7 million, on September 1.

  • ENA: 40.63 million tokens, about $6.1 million, on September 2.

  • Combined first-week unlocks total roughly $813 million by the itemized figures, with HYPE accounting for almost all of it.

A caution on the data: these figures come from exchange blogs and third-party trackers rather than a primary Hyperliquid disclosure, and dollar values shift with price. The number to watch is not the unlock itself but on-chain claims and any transfers to exchanges in the days after September 6.
