Hashdex Bitcoin ETF Completes Liquidation After Selling Its BTC Holdings
Hashdex has completed the closure of its Bitcoin ETF, selling the fund’s remaining Bitcoin over the counter and distributing cash to shareholders.
Hashdex Asset Management has completed the liquidation of the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, according to an August 24 Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Bitcoin positions sold over the counter
Trading in the fund’s shares was suspended after the market closed on August 17. Hashdex then disposed of all remaining fund assets. Apart from cash, those positions consisted of Bitcoin and were sold through an over-the-counter transaction to an unaffiliated third party.
Following the sale, the sponsor distributed cash to shareholders based on each investor’s proportional interest in the fund. The filing confirms the asset disposition and cash distribution rather than an in-kind transfer of Bitcoin.
Why the ETF closed
Hashdex announced the planned closure earlier in August after reviewing assets under management, trading liquidity, operating costs, investor demand and the product’s role in its wider lineup. The fund had approximately $14.7 million in assets under management as of July 30, according to the sponsor’s earlier announcement.
What the closure means
The liquidation applies to this specific Hashdex product and does not represent a shutdown of the broader U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market. Product closures can occur when a fund lacks sufficient scale or no longer fits an issuer’s commercial strategy.
